JD & Google: the enemy of my enemy is my friend

In a recent article for Campaign Asia, Head of APAC Richard Brosgill discusses Google's recent $550 million investment in JD.com and what it may mean in eCommerce and Search.

This week Google announced plans to invest $550 million into JD.com. Although this is a drop in the ocean for Google, the move appears to be a tactical play to combat the growing competition from internet retailers, such as Amazon and Alibaba, who are becoming an increasing threat to Google’s core business, search. An increasing number of consumers are turning directly to these ecommerce led platforms to search for products, and the threat is now extending to informational searches across voice assistants.
